Frequently Asked Questions About Gambrel Garages

Our Pequea dealers are located in PA, MD, NJ, DE, VA, NY, MA, VT, and NC.

Inspired by European and Dutch architecture, the distinctive Gambrel design is known for its two-sided, dual-slope roof. This structure maximizes second-story floor space by creating more headroom and usable interior area than traditional rooflines. As a result, Gambrel-style garages are especially popular for attics, lofts, and storage uses.

Yes. In most cases, you will need a permit to build a Gambrel garage. As garages are larger structures, they will need to be approved by your local town, city, county, or state. You should also ensure that the location where you plan to place your garage follows all setbacks and other requirements set in place by your area’s planning or building department.

As with most structures, a foundation is an essential component. This is true for garages, too! Most prefab garages will require a concrete foundation due to their size and weight, but some modular garages can be placed on a stone base. Contact your builder or dealer to confirm you are preparing the correct foundation for your garage!

Planning for and choosing the correct size garage is an important part of the garage-planning process! No one wants to purchase a new garage and discover it isn’t large enough for their needs! While planning for your garage, be sure to consider how many vehicles you plan to store in the garage (we recommend 12-14 feet for the average car), how much room you want or need for hobbies or studio space, and if you’re looking to extend your storage space like, for example, with an attic.

After you have a complete understanding of how much space you want, you’ll also want to consider which prefab garage design will work best for your space and your needs. All of our designs are customizable, but even if you’re looking for a custom garage, it’s a good idea to start with a basic idea and build from there! The A-Frame garage is perfect for maximizing storage space or adding an attic. The Modular garage is an affordable option that can be quickly assembled, often without the need for a concrete base. Finally, the Gambrel garage is ideal for maximizing attic space while making the most of a smaller garage footprint.
