Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Living Pavilions

Our Pequea dealers are located in PA, MD, NJ, DE, VA, NY, MA, VT, and NC.

Yes. In most states, counties, and cities, a permit is required to build or place a pavilion in your yard or outdoor space. Exact permit applications and specifications differ by individual area, so be sure to check in with your local building department to ensure you have everything you need to apply for a permit.

No, a pavilion’s foundation is an important part of your project and structure. Installing pavilion footers and/or post brackets and having a sturdy foundation is essential to your pavilion’s construction process.

Read more about our pavilion foundations, tiers, and bracket recommendations on our outdoor living pavilion options page.

It is possible to attach a pavilion to your house. These installation processes will take additional planning, engineering, and inspections compared to a free-standing pavilion. You will want to make sure your home can support the structure and that your structure can be properly fastened to your home.

We do not usually recommend mounting a pavilion on an existing deck unless it is properly reinforced. If you are interested in installing a pavilion to your deck, we recommend installing concrete footers/piers under your deck, installing the pavilion with longer posts, and then installing deck boards.

Contact your dealer to find out what is possible in your space and to begin the planning process!

The primary difference between a pergola and a pavilion is the roof. Pergolas have lattice roofs that allow natural light from above, while pavilions have solid roofs that provide overhead sun protection. In general, pavilions tend to be larger and more weather-proof than pergolas.

The most important factors to consider when choosing the size of your pavilion are your yard size, the intended use for your pavilion, and what kind of furniture you want to place under the pavilion. A good size for a backyard pavilion ultimately depends on what size backyard you are working with. For smaller outdoor spaces, any pavilion size between 10’x14’ and 16’x18’ would complement your space best. If you have a larger space and plan to host larger groups of people, pavilion sizes such as 20×20 or 20×30 might work best.
